Humanity’s true moral test

“Humanity’s true moral test, its fundamental test (which lies deeply buried from view), consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals.”
Milan Kundera The Unbearable Lightness of Being, 1984

"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated " Mahatma Gandhi

Bearskin caps
« on: February 17, 2008, 10:20:27 PM »
Canadian black bears are still being cruelly killed and skinned so that they can be made into ceremonial caps for The Queen’s Guards! These beautiful animals are either shot during “sports” hunts or ensnared in painful traps, where they often suffer for days without food or water before they are put out of their misery.

The MoD has done virtually nothing to further its search for synthetic materials to use instead of black bear skins. In fact, when the MoD was presented with a high-tech synthetic material – sourced by PETA and made to the MoD’s own specifications – officials tried to justify not using the material by stating that it “lacks life” and “doesn’t bounce back”. Just like the poor bears!

Send a message to Secretary of State Des Browne urging him to find a cruelty-free alternative to the use of fur in The Queen’s Guards’ caps.

Ann Widdecombe Unveils Shocking New Bearskins Video

Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe has unveiled new video footage from an undercover investigation into the slaughter of black bears in Canada – the source of fur for Britain's Royal Guards' caps. The footage shows hungry mother bears as they are lured to bait sites, only to be gunned down for their fur, leaving their cubs orphaned. The shocking video, which Ms Widdecombe showed at the Houses of Parliament to a room full of media and other governmental figures, shows the baiting, shooting and skinning of bears by hunters who make crude sexist comments as they work.

Members of Parliament Protest Against Palace Guards' Bearskin Caps

Wearing faux-bearskin caps emblazoned with a "No Fur" logo and standing with a banner reading, "MoD: Go Fake, for the Bears' Sake", Glenda Jackson, Mike Hancock and dozens of other cross-party MPs gathered outside the Houses of Parliament to protest against the use of real bear fur in The Queen's Guards' caps. The MPs and PETA are calling on Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles and the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to stop using bear pelts to make headpieces for the Five Guards' Regiments and to have the caps fashioned from luxurious faux fur instead.
