Humanity’s true moral test

“Humanity’s true moral test, its fundamental test (which lies deeply buried from view), consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals.”
Milan Kundera The Unbearable Lightness of Being, 1984

"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated " Mahatma Gandhi

Ethical Shopping is for people with a conscience:
  • No Animal Ingredients or by products
  • Biodegradable
  • Not tested on Animals
I know many here are also against using the monopoly  Proctor & Gamble but don't know where to buy non animal tested or cruelty free products at a reasonable price that work

Every 12 seconds an animal dies in a UK laboratory. Please buy cruelty free

I've found a few places including one that has a BOGOF offer  (Buy One Get One Free)

I've ordered a few bottles of  Bio D washing up liquid from http://homecareessentials.co.uk/index.html

Animal Aid also organise a 'cruelty-free fair' in London each year before xmas where you can buy all sorts of stuff, this year's (2008) fair is on 30 November,  Info on last year's event is here http://www.animalaid.org.uk/h/n/NEWS/news_living/ALL/1644//

For general info about 'good' and 'bad' suppliers, check out Naturewatch. They do a booklet that, although it doesn't list every company under the sun, is more comprehensive than the BUAV listing. I also think it's more 'accurate', e.g. Naturewatch will no longer endorse the Body Shop since its takeover by L'Oreal, whereas BUAV still do.
 http://www.naturewatch.org/shoppingguide/CSG.asp

And on a similar vein to prevent animal suffering,I find this list invaluable when it comes to deciding which charity to donate to.Don't want my donations going to companies that use my money to fund cruel and futile experiments.

We bought some wonderful soap from www.naturalcollection.com
Oliva soaps, cheap, clean lovely, natural, kind to skin and animals

£7.95 for a pack of 9 (125 g)  bars
which is great value and much better than the artificial highly perfumed soaps  we are brainwashed into buying from the adverts

We are trying http://www.kingfishertoothpaste.com/

It contains no artificial colourings, flavourings, sweeteners or preservatives. Instead, they use natural ingredients. Real fennel and real lemons, for example.

& so far it seems better than the expensive artificial brands that  are full of chemicals & additives and poisons
Available from good Health food shops (including Holland & Barrett).

Some Supermarkets, some chemists  and many alternative health clinics

I always make sure the products I use have been approved by BUAV or are listed by Naturewatch in their Compassionate Shopper guide.  A lot of companies say they do not test but may be owned by a larger company with no such policy (like Body Shop being owned by L'Oreal) or they get animal testing done for them abroad by another company or their ingredients have been tested on animals before they bought them.  If unsure contact the company and find out their FCOD(fixed cut off date) if they don't have one then don't buy from them.
