Humanity’s true moral test

“Humanity’s true moral test, its fundamental test (which lies deeply buried from view), consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals.”

Stop Palin exterminating Beluga Whales
« on: January 29, 2009, 10:12:10 AM »
Governor Sarah Palin won't give wildlife a break. Last week, she announced the state of Alaska will sue to strike down Endangered Species Act protection for the imperiled Cook Inlet beluga whale. This rare white whale's population has already plummeted from thousands to just 375 in the last two decades. They will certainly go extinct if Palin has her way.

The Center for Biological Diversity - a non-profit conservation organization committed to protecting endangered species - has gone up against Governor Palin before and is gearing up to do it again. Last August, after we won federal protection for the polar bear, Palin filed suit to strike the protections down in order to make things easier for Big Oil in the Arctic.
Our lawyers and scientists are already in court to block Palin's anti-polar bear actions, and we'll soon jump in to save the beluga from her reckless campaign to promote oil & gas interests. But we also need to build a groundswell of public support. Please help us now to protect beluga whales by sending a letter asking the Obama administration to oppose Palin's lawsuit

Always ready to sacrifice Alaskan wildlife to Big Oil, Governor Sarah Palin now has one of the state's most endangered species in her crosshairs. On Friday, March 13, Palin will get the green light to go to court and try to strip Cook Inlet belugas of their Endangered Species Act protection.

It's not enough that this critically imperiled population of belugas has plunged from 1,300 to about 375 whales due to noise and pollution -- last month Palin asked for a $6-million war chest in state taxpayer dollars to fund her lawsuits against the beluga, polar bear, and other endangered species in Alaska.
This Friday marks the first day Palin can go to court after she announced her plans to sue against the beluga in January. It's fitting that Whalin' Palin will finally get the chance to file her lawsuit on Friday the 13th --  the day will be very bad luck for Cook Inlet belugas if she succeeds.

The Center for Biological Diversity has prevailed over Palin's attacks on Alaska's endangered species so far, and we can prevail again: Our legal team is building the case against her latest assault as I write. We put the beluga on the endangered list in the first place over her strenuous objections, and we're ready for round two.
